The possibility of Mamma Mia 3 has been a topic of speculation and excitement among fans for years. With the success of 'Mamma Mia!' (2008) and its sequel 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' (2018), the idea of a third instalment has always lingered in the air.

Now, recent developments suggest that Mamma Mia 3 may finally be on the horizon.

The Mamma Mia films are beloved not only for their catchy ABBA soundtrack and feel-good storytelling but also for their breath-taking Greek settings.

The original 2008 film transported audiences to a dreamy Greek island, while the 2018 sequel introduced a new yet equally enchanting coastal backdrop.

Filming took place on a number of Greek islands, Skiathos, Skopelos and the lesser-known mainland destination of the Pelion Peninsula.

Skopelos – The Star of the Show

Skopelos, an island in the northern Sporades, served as the main setting for the film's fictional island, Kalokairi. Known for its lush greenery and dazzling blue waters, Skopelos was the perfect backdrop for Donna’s charming hotel and Sophie’s wedding preparations. Some of the most memorable scenes were filmed at:

Who can forget the pretty scene with steps up to Agios Ioannis Chapel. Perched high on a rock overlooking the Aegean, this scenic chapel hosted the unforgettable wedding scene. Visitors must climb a steep staircase to reach it, but the panoramic views really make the trek worthwhile, make sure you bring good walking shoes.

The invitng azure waters of Kastani Beach on Skopelos

Kastani Beach – The backdrop for fun musical numbers like *Does Your Mother Know*, this golden beach remains a favourite among film fans.

Glisteri Beach – Another stunning location used in the film, ideal for secluded seaside relaxation.

During their time on Skopelos, the cast including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan, reportedly fell in love with the island’s beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Locals recall seeing the actors dining at traditional tavernas, enjoying fresh Greek cuisine, and embracing the island’s warm hospitality. Some residents even had the chance to interact with the stars, making the filming experience a cherished memory for the community.

The impact of Mamma Mia! on Skopelos was huge, but don't let you put that off visiting, the island hasn't changed much despite its popularity. Following the film’s release in 2008, the island became a sought-after destination for fans eager to visit the real-life Kalokairi. Today, visitors can embark on guided tours to explore the movie’s filming locations, retracing the steps of their favourite characters while soaking in the island’s enchanting scenery.

Skiathos  – A Gateway to Villa Kalokairi

Nearby Skiathos, the only Sporades Island with an airport and therefore very popular especially as it has over 60 sandy beaches to choose from, played a role in the film’s iconic boat departure scene, where Sophie sets out to meet her three potential fathers. The Old Port of Skiathos provided the perfect picturesque setting.

Skiathos Town's narrow streets are a charming maze of whitewashed houses and hidden gems to explore

If you’ve never visited Skiathos, it really is the gem of the Sporades, is renowned for its stunning beaches, lively atmosphere and lush greenery. With over 60 sandy beaches to choose from, including the famous Koukounaries Beach, the island is a paradise for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts.

The charming town of Skiathos, with its whitewashed houses, bustling harbour and vibrant nightlife, Skiathos offers a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Visitors can explore historical sites like the medieval Castle of Skiathos and the Monastery of Evangelistria, which played a significant role in Greece's fight for independence.

Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and pine-covered hills, Skiathos is an idyllic retreat that seamlessly combines natural beauty, cultural richness, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Pelion - Greece’s Hidden Gem

On the Greek mainland, the Pelion Peninsula is the favourite holiday destination of the Greeks and it’s here we find the small fishing village of Damouchari, which became the filming location for waterfront scenes in particular where the hole cast jumped in to the sea from the jetty!

Here you will find spectacular beaches, dramatic coastlines and family run tavernas. Its quaint cobbled streets and crystal-clear bay add to its rustic charm.

The pretty waterside villages of the Pelion Peninsula

The claw-like Pelion Peninsula forms one arm of the almost landlocked Pagasitic Gulf. This gentler landscape with its scattered fishing villages, olive groves, vineyards and excellent beaches is more typically Greek than the mountains behind.

The Aegean coast of the peninsula is more spectacular than the Gulf side. Here, steep stream filled valleys and ravines end in tree-lined coves and rocky headlands, often with small villages such as Mylopotamos, perched on the steep hillsides.

Every cove, inhabited or not, has it’s stretch of sand or shingle and most are connected by Kalderimia that follow the coast. It’s perfect for those who look to explore the undiscovered Greek mainland.
