The Agios Ioannis Prodromos Monastery

Just a brief short drive east of Glossa, stands as a picturesque marvel atop rocky cliffs extending into the Aegean Sea, offering a captivating vista over a charming cove. 

Merely 300 meters from Agia Varvara, this monastery is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and underwent reconstruction in the 18th century, built upon ancient foundations. 

Its architectural style mirrors that of Mount Athos, the birthplace of its monastery, featuring two choirs and an opulent wooden altar screen adorned with intricate carvings depicting vine leaves, birds, animals, and fifteen representations of significant Orthodox celebrations. 

Noteworthy are its icons, dating back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries AD. The monastery also serves as the custodian of numerous historical documents from the Turkish occupation era. Originally inhabited by monks, it came under the stewardship of nuns in 1920, and to this day, remains home to a small community, hence accessible only during its feast days.

Agios Ioannis Church

Used as the iconic setting for the wedding scene in "Mamma Mia," Agios Ioannis has gained widespread fame. This quaint chapel sits nestled on the northern coast, merely a 15-minute drive from Glossa or an hour-long scenic stroll. 

Positioned atop a petite rocky outcrop, it gracefully stands 100m above the sea level, boasting a pebbled bay below and a winding ascent of 202 steps leading to its doorstep.

Mount Palouki Monasteries 

Aptly named "the Finger," Mount Palouki rises steeply opposite Skopelos Town and is adorned with several captivating monasteries, contributing to its reputation as the holy mountain of Skopelos. 

The area's prohibition on hunting has transformed it into a sanctuary for small animals and birds, adding to its allure as a natural paradise.
